Around the League

Check it out here:

Around The League

Looking at one set of games in particular, the Battle of the Hudson River, it's easy to see why the Rangers are struggling. It's just another episode of Jaromir being Jaromir. It's bad enough that he phones it in eight times a season whenever No. 20 in red and black lurks in the shadows. Now he has a shot to redeem himself. Go win the skills competition for us. My captain, my captain! Win us a freakin' game!

Fans in DC, is this kind of play beginning to look familiar?

Jagr is simply giving up. He sees the writing on the wall. He knows he can't lead the Rangers. Tom Renney made a huge mistake in declaring a moody, free-skating scorer his captain. It'll be Renney who likely pays the price if the Rangers fall any further this season, but can JJ be that far behind outta' town?

Hard Hits

Hard Hits: With the deadline finally over, who were the winners and losers? Winners include the Flyers and Blues, who both did a wonderful job retooling their rosters and stockpiling picks for the future. Of the playoff contenders, the Penguins did a solid job bolstering their roster by adding team toughness up front. Losers include the Ducks and Senators, who both failed to significantly upgrade for the postseason. After how Anaheim GM Brian Burke foolishly dealt Shane O'Brien for a first round pick, you would've thought he'd turn that into something. But he lost out to other teams on Keith Tkachuk, Bill Guerin and Todd Bertuzzi. As for the Sens, Lawrence Nycholat and Oleg Saprykin don't scare anyone. What is John Muckler thinking? The Thrashers lose because they overpaid in every deal sacrificing the future in the process. Unless they make the postseason and go deep, GM Don Waddell can't justify what he gave up. The Islanders are in the same position after giving up a King's ransom for ultimate warrior Ryan Smyth. Either win at least two rounds or falter and be left to explain to their supporters what they paid with possibly nothing to show come July for Smyth and Jason Blake. ... Nice to see such a classy ceremony by the Oilers for Mark Messier at Rexall Place. And the best part aside from how well put together the highlight reel clips were was how brief it was compared to last year's overproduction on Broadway. It lasted about 44 minutes which seemed right. But also, it seemed like a different setting. Sure, the former captain who helped lead Edmonton to all five Stanley Cups came out with the Cup and skated around in a classic Oilers Messier jersey. But he seemed more at ease than last year maybe cause it was back home where he made his childhood hockey dream come true. Storybook. He did shed some tears but that's how much this man cares. It was nicely done. ... Remember when Marcel Hossa had one goal? Just checking. He's the most consistent Ranger these days. ... Big question in Jersey headed to the playoffs. Can the Devils win every game 1-0? ... We're told by NY Hockey Report's own Joe McDonald that Jason Blake, who recorded a first period hat trick in the Isles' 6-5 OT win over the Flyers was that close to being a Duck for a first round pick. But they didn't get the paper work in on time. ... If you're a Western Conference top three seed, which team would you rather face in the first round? Calgary or Minnesota? Pick your poison. ... And finally, it's the final game of the season at Pittsburgh. And the shootout looms as to whether his club will make the postseason. But captain Jaromir Jagr refuses to take the shot where his career began and his team is eliminated to loud cheers at Mellon Arena. Just picture it.

Funny

This funny assessment of the Paul Mara trade comes from my online buddy James:

JamesRG1221 [5:05 PM]: Ah. the eventual pairing of Rachunek and Mara hear that clicking? that's our GA column going up
Kovy274Hart [5:06 PM]: lmao i can't wait :)

I just want to point out to Joe McDonald that ESPN's own Barry Melrose concluded that the Rangers gave up today. But if that were really true, Jagr and Michael Nylander would be gone. At least they got a great return for scrub Pascal Dupuis. I would've taken a used puck. Who ever would've thought Adam Hall would outlast Dupuis?

Official...

Hale and a 5th Rounder to Calgary for a 3rd Rounder.

Boyes Moved

The Bruins have moved forward Brad Boyes to St. Louis in exchange for defenseman Dennis Wideman. Rumors are surfacing from Calgary that the Devils have dealt defenseman David Hale to the Flames. For more if it becomes official, please check our full deadline list below!

In Return...

It's a 1st-round pick, RobertNilsson and Ryan O'Marra

It's the Fishsticks

Smyth to the Isles.

Smyth Dealt

It looks like the Oilers couldn't reach agreement with heart and soul forward Ryan Smyth. Reports are that he has been traded. I'm thinking Buffalo for some reason. They could certainly use his grit. We'll update who the team is when it's announced!

More info

At this point, according to my buddy in California, the Norstrom to Rangers deal at this point is just pure speculation. Stay tuned!

Update

As the deadline expired, some more deals have come through. Mattias Norstrom has been moved by the Kings. The hot rumor is that it's the Rangers. Yeah. About 11 years too late! Scott Parker was traded from San Jose back to the Avalanche.

Waiver Pickups

The following are waived players who were claimed by new clubs today:

Blue Jackets claim G Brian Boucher from Blackhawks
Flyers claim F Denis Hamel from Thrashers
Thrashers reclaim C Jason Krog from Rangers
Coyotes claim F Niko Kapanen from Thrashers
Canadiens claim G Michael Leighton from Flyers

NHL Trade Deadline Day

Already, we've seen some rumored deals finally become official today. With three plus hours to go (don't forget there always seems to be a deal around 4 ET), we're going to run an official list and update it as deals go through. Tune into Battle of NY for the latest on all the trade happenings!

Rumors: If you believe NY Post's Larry Brooks, Jaromir Jagr could be had for the right price. Don't expect it though. The Rangers would probably want somebody to pay through the roof. And considering how some have severely overpaid already for lesser players, there's almost no chance the moody Ranger captain is going anywhere. ... On the contraire, look for the Islanders to deal Jason Blake. They've been unable to reach agreement on a new contract and the Richard Zednik pickup yesterday could signal the impending free agent's departure.

Guerin Deal is Happening

Possible teams Detroit, Anaheim, San Jose.

Update

Biron to Philly, Conklin to Buffalo.

Laraque waives his no-trade clause, headed to Pittsburgh.

A Quick Reminder

Just a reminder, check out The Fourth Period for all the exclusive trade news and analysis.

They're reporting Noah Welch to Florida for Roberts.

Also, the NY Post has a story today claiming Jagr is on the block.

As deals happen, we'll try to provide updates and continued analysis on what promises to be a busy day. Look for Anaheim and Buffalo to be buyers. It's no secret the Ducks are after Bill Guerin. Maybe GM Brian Burke will dangle that number one pick he got back from Tampa Bay in the Shane O'Brien deal. The Sabres are banged up and definitely could use another gritty forward to help replace Paul Gaustad. They also are in need of another defenseman with Jaroslav Spacek out a few more weeks. Aaron Miller or Mattias Nortstrom might be the way to go here. If Buffalo doesn't do much today, they could pay for it later this Spring.

The Islanders should move Jason Blake, who can't reach a new deal with the club. He's said to be at arms with management, which might've prompted GM Garth Snow to wheel a second round pick to Washington for Richard Zednik. Keep an eye on what happens with the Blake situation.

As for the Rangers, it looks like they won't be sellers. The organization foolishly believes it can still qualify for the postseason. Six points out with 20 games left including a home match tonight against Montreal, they probably will try to add a gritty forward to replace Brendan Shanahan (concussion). Keep an eye on defenseman Aaron Ward to see if he's moved. He wasn't happy with his benching the other night.

The Devils right now could stand pat due to the chemistry they have and also their cap situation. But you never can tell what GM Lou Lamoriello has up his sleeve. If he makes any kind of move, it will be something off the radar.

Keep up with today's wheelings and dealings here. We'll see ya all later!

Roberts Waives No-Trade, Headed For Pittsburgh

Well, it looks like Gary Roberts will be relocating. The 40 year-old veteran forward who helped Calgary win a Stanley Cup in 1989 agreed to waive his no-trade clause with Florida earlier tonight. And it appears he'll be heading to Pittsburgh later today. The Panthers will be receiving defense prospect Noah Welch in return. It will become official when Roberts signs the no-trade waiver.

Analysis: This is a solid deal for the Pens which brings a much needed physical veteran presence up front. Add that to the young crop of Crosby, Malkin and Staal and it makes them even tougher if they get into the postseason. They still need to pickup another defenseman to be taken seriously this Spring.

More Deals Struck Tonight

Trades Continue: With the deadline a day away, a few more deals took place tonight. Let's take a look at what happened:

1.Islanders acquire RW Richard Zednik from Washington for a 2007 2nd round pick.

Analysis: Isles get themselves a streaky forward who can add some offense. But is his acquisition to offset the potential loss of Jason Blake? The team's leading scorer could be gone by tomorrow because he's nothing but a greedy baby more concerned about his future than a playoff race. Caps sell off a part and get decent value.

2.Senators pickup D Lawrence Nycholat from Capitals for D Andy Hedlund and a 2007 sixth round pick.

Analysis: Sens add some blueline depth while Caps continue to plan ahead.

3.Canucks get D Brent Sopel from Los Angeles for 2008 second and fourth round picks.

Analysis: Canucks bring back a player familiar with their system who should fit in well for stretch. Meanwhile, Kings GM Dean Lombardi gets a nice return for someone that wasn't in the club's plans.

4.Canucks acquire C Bryan Smolinski from Blackhawks for a conditional second round pick.

Analysis: Vancouver picks up some much needed center depth. The versatile Smolinski can center a second or checking line and wins draws. Meanwhile, Chicago deals a player who wanted to stay. Hope that pick turns into something worthwhile. Does Smolinski return this summer as a rental?

5.Detroit trades RW Jason Williams to Chicago. Flyers trade C Kyle Calder to Hawks for D Lasse Kukkonen and a 2007 third round pick. Hawks then ship Calder to Detroit for Williams.

Analysis: The Wings hope Calder can play better out West while Flyers continue to revamp their blueline adding Kukkonen to Braydon Coburn, Ryan Parent and current Flyer Joni Pitkanen. We're left wondering why the Hawks didn't just keep Calder since he played well there and was a center. Williams isn't a bad player but this doesn't seem like a very good deal for the Hawks.

Habs Edge Leafs

In a crucial battle up north, the Canadiens held on for a 5-4 victory over the Maple Leafs. Big performances from Sheldon Souray (team leading 22nd), Saku Koivu (goal, assist) and returning enigma Alexei Kovalev (assist but played inspired) were enough for Montreal to vault over the Islanders and Hurricanes into seventh in the East with 72 points. Souray's power play blast off a clean Koivu win put the Habs up three and forced Toronto to replace Andrew Raycroft with Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Jeremey Williams and Alex Steen tallied for the Leafs early in the third to make things interesting. But an undetected high stick by Montreal's Garth Murray on Leafs captain Mats Sundin late in the contest proved to be too much for them to overcome. They remained in 10th with 69 points. Sundin was visibly upset and even spit out blood to prove a point. The Leafs couldn't tie it with Aubin off for an extra attacker as the Canadiens withstood a mad scramble to post the big win.

In another pivotal playoff battle, the Thrashers defeated the Bruins 3-2. Marian Hossa scored his club-leading 36th with less than 13:00 left to boost Atlanta to 74 points, one behind Southeast leader Tampa Bay. Alexei Zhitnik registered an assist in his Thrasher debut and Atlanta posted a franchise best 18th road win this season.

In other action, it's the Flames all over the Coyotes 5-1 up in Alberta while the Ducks on the strength of two goals from rookie Dustin Penner lead San Jose 2-0.

Isles Make a Deal

Garth and Wang aren't done yet apparently. They get Richard Zednik from the Capitals for a 2nd Rounder. For more info, head here: http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/was070226.html

The Isles have some cap room, and Zednik's a freebie at the end of the year, so getting some offensive depth at this price is OK for the orange and blue.

The big rumor going around is that Gary Roberts is headed to Pittsburgh. More to come.

Atlanta @ Boston at 7:00 PM on VERSUS and VERSUSHD. Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and Bob Harwood doing that one.

Anaheim @ San Jose at 10:00 PM on VERSUS and VERSUSHD (mmm...HD hockey double header). Joe Beninati, Andy Brickley and Chris Simpson are working that game.

YouTube Video Of Day

This one comes courtesy of last night's Pack win over Norfolk. This game featured 206 penalty minutes. Here, a chaotic woman can be heard screaming in the background as former Rangers first round pick Al Montoya drops'em during an always entertaining goalie fight:

Montoya Gets In The Act

Rivet to SJ

Rivet and a 5th to SJ for Josh Georges and a 1st.

MTL wins this bigtime folks.

Talking Deal

With the deadline two days away, we've already seen some activity this weekend. As Steve noted earlier, the Thrashers have dealt for defenseman Alexei Zhitnik and power forward Keith Tkachuk over the past 24 hours. Atlanta is banking on the two veterans to get their franchise into the playoffs for the first time. Let's further examine the recent trades that have taken place including these two:

1.Carolina acquires RW Anson Carter from Columbus for a 2008 fifth round pick.

Analysis: With injuries to key forwards Erik Cole and Cory Stillman, the defending champs are hoping the veteran Carter can provide a lift. They got him at a bargain price. Sure, his career has been up and down. But with the Canes' talent, this could be a good fit.

Who won:
Considering that the Jackets were dumb enough to sign him and then all they could muster was a lower end pick, advantage Carolina.

2.Tampa Bay acquires D Shane O'Brien and a 2007 third round pick from Anaheim for G Gerald Coleman and a 2007 first round pick.

Analysis: Perhaps preparing to go after Keith Tkachuk and Bill Guerin, the Ducks parted with physical defenseman O'Brien for another goalie and a first round pick. For the Lightning, it's a no-brainer because they add a solid defender who strengthens their blueline and makes them an even scarier opponent for anyone in the East.

Who won: Unless that first round pick turns into something which can help the Ducks come out of the tough West this Spring, it's advantage Tampa Bay by a country mile.

3.Atlanta picks up D Alexei Zhitnik from Philadelphia in exchange for D Braydon Coburn.

Analysis: In danger again of failing to qualify for the postseason after such a promising beginning, the Thrashers get some much needed blueline help. For the Flyers, they get a former high first round pick who they hope can improve their D in the future along with Ryan Parent and Joni Pitkanen.

Who won: Atlanta had to make this deal. Short-term, it's a win for them but the long-term has the potential to be advantage Flyers.

4.Atlanta acquires LW Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis in exchange for RW Glen Metropolit, 2007 first and third round selections, a 2008 second round pick and a 2008 conditional first round pick.

Analysis: The playoff desperate Thrashers overpay severely for Tkachuk sacrificing their future in the process. If KT fits in with Bobby Holik and Scott Mellanby, they should make the postseason and could be a tough out. Meanwhile, St. Louis Team President John Davidson gets a solid player in Metropolit back and a plethora of draft picks for the future.

Who won: Unless Tkachuk helps the Thrashers win a couple of rounds and re-signs, this is one of the biggest hoists in a long time. In his press release, Davidson thanked him for his dedication to the Blues organization. He should send GM Don Waddell a nice Christmas card. Advantage Blues for a long time.

Hard Hits: Over the past couple of days, there have also been some re-signings. Davidson has been very busy. Last night, he re-signed defenseman Eric Brewer to a four-year deal worth about an average of $4.5 million a season. He overpaid but obviously valued what the defenseman brought. Davidson also reached agreement on a multi-year deal with netminder Manny Legace. So it seems that JD is well on his way to setting the foundation for his club's future. Just wait to see what he gets for leading scorer Bill Guerin. Anaheim is rumored to be very interested. How much will they overpay for the gritty vet? ... Meanwhile in Beantown, the Bruins re-signed Marco Sturm to a four-year deal. The only holdover from the blockbuster deal which sent Joe Thornton to San Jose, Sturm has 20 goals and 12 assists for 32 points. At least they have something to show for that awful trade. ... The Devils trade of Alex Korolyuk back to San Jose for a third round pick fell through. Apparently, Korolyuk was interested in returning to the Sharks for the playoffs but couldn't. And so Lou Lamoriello for once doesn't win. But how long before he snatches Patrick Marleau for some spiked Kool Aid or gets another cap exemption? Couldn't resist. ... So you're Rangers coach Tom Renney and your club has been struggling all year defensively. Your worst defender is Karel Rachunek, who is seemingly never in the right place. So what message do you send? You bench a character player in Aaron Ward over him and have a proud guy who's been part of three Cups leave practice. This while Rachunek, who never wanted to come here until he saw the team make the playoffs last year continues to botch defensive coverages every game and is the softest blueliner the club has ever had, making fans miss Tom Poti. Something is very rotten on Broadway. Especially if management doesn't sell come Tuesday.

The Art Of Competitive Walking

Okay folks...I know what you're thinking. What the heck is Competitive Walking. Well, during the last Summer Olympics, it actually became a sport where gold medals were won. I like to walk as much as anyone. But as a former long distance runner who's about to get back into it, it's hard to take competitive walking seriously.

Here's an extended conversation between myself and my Devil buddy Rob on the art of this intense sport:

Kovy274Hart [12:22 AM]: For Marissa Conroy of McKee/StatenIsland Tech, winning a city championship event is somethingnew. For Shannon Browne of Curtis, it's old hat.
Conroy (1,500-meter walk) and Browne (1,500 run) wereStaten Island's individual event gold medalists atyesterday's PSAL indoor city track and fieldchampionship at the Armory in Manhattan.

Kovy274Hart [12:23 AM]: Conroy had two goals yesterday -- to win, and to breakeight minutes.
Taking the lead after 300 meters, the MSIT senior was neverseriously challenged and finished in a personal best 7minutes, 55.68 seconds.
"I was surprised no one was there," she said."Now I want to do well at the state meet."
;-)
KrAzE96 [12:23 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:23 AM]: wtf
KrAzE96 [12:23 AM]: cmon
Kovy274Hart [12:23 AM]: lmao
Kovy274Hart [12:23 AM]: the grit
Kovy274Hart [12:23 AM]: of walking
Kovy274Hart [12:24 AM]: the competition
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: "I won the championship"
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: "what did you do?"
Kovy274Hart [12:24 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: "I walked better then my competition"
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: "....."
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: Theres something he could show his grandkids
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: "I used to walk fast"
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: cmon
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: cmfuckinon
KrAzE96 [12:24 AM]: walking? are you kidding me?
Kovy274Hart [12:25 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: are we talking about walking
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: walking?
Kovy274Hart [12:25 AM]: walking is intense
Kovy274Hart [12:25 AM]: it's ultracompetitive
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: lmao
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: they're fucken walking
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: "So Conroy what's your strategy today"
KrAzE96 [12:25 AM]: "To put one foot in front of the other and give it the best I got"
Kovy274Hart [12:25 AM]: lmao
Kovy274Hart [12:26 AM]: lmao
Kovy274Hart [12:26 AM]: ahahahahaha
KrAzE96 [12:26 AM]: lmfao cmfuckinon
Kovy274Hart [12:26 AM]: ahhaahahahahqa
Kovy274Hart [12:26 AM]: you're killing me

And the convo continues with some interesting portrayals of what Devils announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick might sound like calling the action:

WARNING: BEFORE READING, YES THIS ACTUAL CONVO DID TAKE PLACE AND THERE WAS NO HARD STUFF INVOLVED.

KrAzE96 [12:27 AM]:
walking at least do something competative. jump hurdles, run, play a sport. How do you have championships for walking
KrAzE96 [12:28 AM]: I wonder what a walking trophy looks like
Kovy274Hart [12:28 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:28 AM]: Someone with one hand and one foot in front of the other
KrAzE96 [12:28 AM]: standing upright
Kovy274Hart [12:28 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:28 AM]: seriously
KrAzE96 [12:28 AM]: I still cant get over that power walking
KrAzE96 [12:29 AM]: is an olympic sport
KrAzE96 [12:29 AM]: "I'd like to thank my quick feet for walking better then my competition today"
Kovy274Hart [12:29 AM]: son in life, you need to walk for to achieve your goals
Kovy274Hart [12:29 AM]: it's essential
KrAzE96 [12:29 AM]: lmao
KrAzE96 [12:29 AM]: walking is usually a cool down exercise
Kovy274Hart [12:30 AM]: but now, it's an intense battle out there!
KrAzE96 [12:30 AM]: so what do you do after you walk for competative walking
Kovy274Hart [12:30 AM]: i wonder what these walkers do for a "warm-up"
KrAzE96 [12:30 AM]: Well kovy
KrAzE96 [12:30 AM]: my guess
KrAzE96 [12:30 AM]: is they put one foot in front of the other
Kovy274Hart [12:30 AM]: Coach: "Walk normal for half a mile at a leisurely pace."
KrAzE96 [12:30 AM]: and take it a step at a time
KrAzE96 [12:31 AM]: lmfao
KrAzE96 [12:31 AM]: competative walking jesus christ
KrAzE96 [12:32 AM]: competative walking makes water polo look like a real sport
Kovy274Hart [12:32 AM]: hey Doc Emrick called it and sounded just as excited about those plays as Devils hockey. "Waffleboarded away!":
KrAzE96 [12:33 AM]: lmao
KrAzE96 [12:34 AM]: I can just imagine Emrick calling competative walking
Kovy274Hart [12:34 AM]: so can i
Kovy274Hart [12:34 AM]: LMAO
KrAzE96 [12:34 AM]: "CONROY TAKES A LEAD HE'S 3 STEPS AHEAD OF THE NEAREST COMPETITOR HE CROSSES THE LINE CROSSES THE LINE CONROOOOOOOOOOOOY"
KrAzE96 [12:35 AM]: Chico Resch: Well Doc he's no Marty but he did a good job out there walking today
Kovy274Hart [12:35 AM]: "And there goes Davis surging ahead of Felix! Back and forth they go veering for position. Who will take it? And it's FELIX BY A NOSE with the suicidal dive clipping the tape! What a photo finish!
KrAzE96 [12:35 AM]: lmao
Kovy274Hart [12:37 AM]: LMFAO AT Chico
Kovy274Hart [12:37 AM]: he would really say that too
KrAzE96 [12:37 AM]: lmfao
Kovy274Hart [12:37 AM]: and then probably grab some popcorn and a beer
KrAzE96 [12:38 AM]: yeah more then likely
KrAzE96 [12:39 AM]: as you crossed the finish line 1st he'd say "That right there is a step marty would've took the effor he put into that was amazing"
KrAzE96 [12:40 AM]: effort*
